PageRank is Google’s measure of trust for a given URL or website address. It was named after Google Founder, Larry Page, who pioneered the concept. If you want the academic explanation of PageRank, here’s a link to Wikipedia. The way I introduce the concept is with a short vignette.
Imagine you’re at a bar, and someone walks up and asks to buy you a drink. You accept and begin having a conversation. Somewhere in the conversation, they mention that they are a doctor. In the back of your mind, you might be saying “sure, whatever”, and you may be skeptical. Well, let’s say that a couple of days go by, and you are at the local hospital taking your grandmother for a series of tests. While you’re waiting, you look up to see the individual from the other night, and they’re wearing a white lab coat. As you observe, you can hear them discussing a procedure from earlier in the day with others dressed in white lab coats. What do you think now? Do you believe that they are what they claimed? That is all Google tries to do with PageRank – they look to the context of other websites that point to your website to determine authenticity. If you say your website is about “Search Engine Optimization”, do other websites provide links to you indicating that you’re a source of information on SEO? This is why backlinks are important when you’re trying to move your website up in a Google search results page.
